Princess of the Stars
Another disaster in the Philippines MV Princess of the Stars was a ferry owned by Filipino shipping company Sulpicio Lines it capsized off the coast of San Fernando, Romblon at the height of Typhoon Fengshen on June 21, 2008. That typhoon passed directly over Romblon as a category 2 storm. The vessel was built in 1984 with a tonnage of approximately 24,000 tons and had a total passenger capacity of 1,992 people. Sulpicio shipping Lines has a poor safety record. In addition to the Princess of the Stars and the Dona Paz, other casualties include the Dona Marilyn in 1988 and the Princess of the Orient in 1998. The Philippine government has ordered the shipping line to stop operations and inspections of the company’s other vessels is underway. The ferry had 845 people on board when it sailed from Manila for Cebu City and encountered “engine trouble” in the middle of typhoon Frank Saturday morning. After it sank only the rear of the ship was visible above the water and a large hole was seen on the left side of the boat. Some passengers managed to jump off the ship and swim to the island. They were some of the lucky survivors. Most of the passengers got trapped inside the vessel and drowned. Of the 845 on board the ill-fated ferry, only 124 casualties and 60 survivors have been accounted for. A MEMBER of the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) said that an error in judgment on the part of MV Princess of the Stars master Florencio Marimon was the root cause of the sea tragedy last June.
