Philippine pearls

I our days most pearls are cultured pearls. The first cultured freshwater pearls originated in Japan. Most pearl farms in the Philippines are located south of the island of Mindanao.
The Japanese run most of these farms. They are experts in culture pearls for both freshwater and saltwater.
The Philippines is one of the biggest supplier of freshwater Pearls and South Sea Pearls.

A pearl forms when some irritant enters the mollusk shell and lodges between the shell and the mantle, or the outer layer, of the animal inside. This irritant may be a boring parasite, a particle of sand or wood, a small fish, or the mollusk's own eggs. The mantle epithelium encloses the irritant in a sac and secretes layers of nacre, or pearl, around the particle.

There are two sorts of pearls. Natural pearls and cultured pearls. Both are mainly used in jewelry. http://www.philippinejewelries.com/

Black, golden and white pearls are the most common ones, but the palette of colors has become much diversified in our days.

The world’s largest natural pearl was found under the Palawan Sea by a Filipino diver in 1934. The giant treasure known as "Pearl of Lao-Tzu" and presumed to be 600 years old, weighed 14 pounds and 9 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 inches in diameter and is now valued at US$42million
