Most popular transportation vehicles in the Philippines

There are more than 235,000 jeepneys in the Philippines. Originated after World War II, when Filipinos modified abandoned U.S. jeeps for use as small buses. They extended the bodies up to four times the original length, added steel roofs, installed bench seats along the sides of the interior, and opened up the backs.
The design can easily carry up to 12 passengers, most of the time they’re overloaded.

Drivers often mounted chrome horses on the hood in remembrance of the horse drawn carriages that once performed the same function.

No two jeepneys look alike. Owners decorate their vehicles with fancy mirrors, lights, paintings, numerous whip antennas, and shiny metallic exteriors. Jeepneys still resemble jeeps, at least from the front, but no longer contain any jeep parts; instead, they are handcrafted from parts taken primarily from junked trucks, and cost less than $6000.

The engines are mainly Toyota.

Jeepneys run like the bus, taxi and cargo services and are used for both long and short distance traveling. They could be hired for private use as well, driver included.

Cebu City and Cavite originally had the largest concentration of jeepney builders in the Philippines but over the last decade or so the sales have declined rapidly, due mainly to imported used vehicles.
Jeepneys ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elW5suaudlg&feature=related )are the most popular and used transportation vehicles.
Unfortunately jeepneys are real smoke belchers too!

The largest manufacturers in the Philippines is a company called Sarao, located near Paranaque.
The largest manufacturer of vintage style army jeepneys is MD Juan.
