Dismantling the Clemenceau
The construction of this aircraft carrier, to implement an aviation attack, interception, reconnaissance and anti-submarine, began in November 1955 in Brest. Launched on 21 December 1957, it conducted its first trials at sea on 23 November 1959 and was admitted to active service on 22 November 1961. During his career, he participated in most of naval operations France: • 1968: Deployment of the Alfa Force in the Pacific. • 1974-1977: Operations Saphir I and II in Indian Ocean 's commitment and safeguards for the independence of the Republic of Djibouti. • 1982-1984: Operation Olifant in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Lebanese civil war. • 1987-1988: Operation Prometheus in the Sea of Oman during the war between Iran and Iraq. • 1990: Operation Salamander in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea during the conflict between Iraq and Kuwait. • 1993-1996: Operation Osprey then Salamander in the Adriatic Sea during the Yugoslav war. Between 1959 and 1997, he suffered, as his sister the aircraft carrier Foch many revisions. It may be noted in particular the modernization "capacity Crusader" in 1966, the "nuclear qualification in 1978, and installation of anti Rattler in 1985 along with the modernization of the propulsion machinery. The Clemenceau has made his last exit to the sea on 16 July 1997. It was disarmed on 1 October 1997. It was sold for scrapping on April 14 2003, but its demolition was the subject of endless controversy. The aircraft carrier Clemenceau is the second warship of the name. The first was a battleship Richelieu of class put on hold in 1939, whose construction was abandoned in June 1940, its hull destroyed by aerial bombing. Dismantling the vessel The Clemenceau was first scheduled to sail to India to be dismantled. But it was not welcome, due to the hundreds of tons of asbestos onboard. The Clemenceau is now at the Graythorp TERRC facility in the UK where it is planned to be dismantled, but GreenPeace an other organizations have already shown their disagreement and protested. Asbestos being the cause.. This story is no over yet! |
